Cleaning floors is more than just sweeping or vacuuming. According to experts, you should be mopping at least once a week since it helps to sanitize the floors, reduce allergies, and prevent surface scratches. With the best vacuum mop combo, you can multitask to keep floors sparkling clean more often and with greater efficiency.

Vacuuming may be one of the most common household chores, but that doesn’t mean there’s no strategy involved. To keep your floors free of dust, dirt and other debris, you’ll need to create a routine, choose the right type of vacuum, and follow some simple steps for use and upkeep.

Choosing the Best Vacuum Cleaner for Your Cleaning Needs

    • Traffic and Carpet Soils: Most carpet soils come in on the shoes of people and pets that enter the home. If you have a house full of kids and pets, you will have more carpet soils being brought into the home,

    • Carpet Fibers: As important as the traffic and type of soil is the type of fibers that your carpet or rugs are made with. Most carpeting today is made of synthetic fibers, primarily nylon, though olefin and polyester are also used. Synthetic fibers are very durable and you can use the most aggressive household vacuum cleaner without fear of fiber damage,

    • Vacuum Cleaner Performance: The key ratings are airflow (the most important of all) and sealed suction (listed on some vacuum cleaner specifications as “water lift”). On canister vacuum cleaners (with or without power heads) airflow of 100 CFM or more (or water lift of 90 inches or more) is recommended

    • Filtration: Most quality vacuum cleaners will do an adequate job of filtering the air the leaves the machine. But if anyone in your home suffers from allergies, asthma or any other health condition that is impacted by fine particles or allergens in the indoor air, a high filtration or HEPA filtration vacuum cleaner is strongly recommended,

    • Quality and Durability: When evaluating durability, look at the quality of the construction. Look for solid components of good quality as opposed to flimsy or brittle appearing materials. Look for good fit and finish without rough edges. The seals should be heavy duty and components that open and close should do so with a nice solid feel,

    • Ease of Use: Consider whether you have any specific issues concerning weight or personal preferences concerning uprights versus canister vacuum cleaners. If there are specific reasons for buying a new vacuum cleaner, remember to be sure that your new one provides solutions to these cleaning challenges,

    • Noise Level: Noise is also a significant consideration. Some vacuum cleaners can be so noisy that they're almost unbearable to use. Many good vacuum cleaners can operate at levels that are quite comfortable and will allow you to hear the phone or doorbell ring quite easily,

    • Capacity: The capacity of a vacuum cleaner relates to the size of the dust bag or cup. The bigger it is, the less often it needs to be changed

    • Attachments: All quality vacuum cleaners come with a set of come with a set of accessory tools that cover most floor and above-floor vacuuming needs. But there are some jobs that need special tools and some tools that just make the job easier and the availability of add-on accessory tools will extend the utility and, often, improve the performance of your vacuum cleaner.

Bag or Bagless – Which Vacuum Is Better

The major difference between vacuum cleaners is whether it’s bagless or uses a dustbag. For most people, it’s a matter of personal preference. But if family members have allergies or asthma, or if you’re concerned about the quality of your indoor air, a vacuum with a dustbag generally is the better choice.

Chosing the best style of Mopping

Strip Mops: Synthetic head wet mops are often in strips with a built-in wringer. These mops are not as absorbent and able to scrub as one made out of cotton, but they are more convenient and easy to care for. They still do a fantastic job on floors and sometimes have a little more scrubbing power than flat mops. These mop heads dry quickly which makes them less likely to get smelly or gross.

Steam Mops: Steam mops are electrical appliances that have a refillable tank for water. It heats up the water, turning it into steam that is released by a trigger; the steam sprays through a reusable mopping pad onto the floor. Steam mops are fantastic because they clean and disinfect. They are, however, more expensive than traditional mops and may not be the best choice for some floor types.

Sponge Mops: consist of a spongy head that usually has an attached wringer. They may have removable heads that allow for easier rinsing and replacement when necessary. Sponge mops are great for cleaning tile and other uneven surfaces.  Rinse the mop completely when you finish the floors, then place it upright in an area where it can completely dry. A wet mop will breed bacteria. When the sponge on the mop begins to break apart, or if the mop begins to smell or discolor, replace the mop head.

Dust Mops: It can be used to clean floors, walls, ceilings, and light fixtures. Usually, these types of mops have a long handle, allowing you to reach corner cobwebs and dusty fans. Dust mops can be made from a variety of materials including, lambswool, microfiber, and synthetics. They are used for dry cleaning and aren't usually meant to be a wet cleaning tool. The mop heads may be disposable or reusable; make sure to wash and dry reusable dust mop heads separate from the other laundry.

String Mops: Traditional cotton string mops are great to use because of their absorbency and scrubbing power. They mops make getting into corners a cinch but can often be more difficult to wring out and maintain. These mops tend to fall apart more quickly and can be a pain to wash and dry fully. They are very inexpensive, though, and do a great job at cleaning floors.

Flat Mops: Flat mops are a popular and common type of mop with a flat head that usually has a disposable or reusable pad that attaches to it. These kinds of mops have become the go-to mop for most regular and everyday mopping chores. Flat mops are great for cleaning, especially on a daily basis.
